Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is certification and why is this important for Crash test dummies?

Dummies are measurement devices and just like a weighing scales, they are susceptible to wear and tear. Over time their response can change, so the measurements they record may become less accurate. Dummy responses need to be repeatable and biofidelic, so the dummies are periodically checked. Various lab tests are carried out, these typically involve drop tests and pendulum tests on the individual parts of the dummy, as well as on the full dummy assembly. This process of checking the dummy is called Certification and it assures that the dummy will perform in the same way every time it is tested under the same test conditions.
