Up to what size do children have to be in a child seat when travelling in a vehicle?

The minimum requirement in Europe is, all children smaller than 1.35 metres tall and under the age of 12 must use a car seat. In some European countries, all children smaller than 1.5 metres tall and under the age of 12 must use a car seat.
